North County’s 5-team contingent in the Western Mass Basketball Tourney got off to a strong start Monday night, with wins for Drury and McCann Tech.

Playing at home, the 3rd seeded Blue Devils rolled past #14 Pioneer Christian 86-34 in a Boys Div. 4 first round game.

The McCann Boys, as the 11th seed in Div. 4, went on the road to face #6 Granby. The Hornets had a happy ride back to North Adams after upending their hosts 52-45. The win earns them a quarterfinal showdown with Drury this Thursday at 7 P.M. While the two schools are practically neighbors, less than a mile down the road from each other, Iberkshires.com reports that it’s been some time since the two teams have played each other, let alone in a tournament game. It should be fun on the Blue Devils home court. We'll have that game for you on AM1230 WNAW and streaming live at wnaw.com Thursday at 6:50.

Tonight, the ladies from those same schools will begin their W. Mass campaigns. McCann will be playing at home, as the #6 seed takes on #11 North Brookfield in a Div. 4 1st round game. Drury will host Mahar in an 8 vs.9 Div. 3 1st-rounder. Both games start at 7 P.M.

Also tonight in Girls Div. 3, 10th seeded Frontier is at #7 Sabis. I mention that because the winner advances to take on 2nd seeded Hoosac Valley Friday night in Cheshire.
