Interest in driving, particularly among teenagers, appears to be waning compared to previous years. I commend my teenage niece for finally obtaining her learner's permit after some effort. Nevertheless, an increasing number of teens are postponing their driver's licenses. Below are some reasons for this shift.

WCVB5 Boston covered a 2020 study conducted by Dr. Federico Vaca, a professor and executive vice chair of Emergency Medicine at UC Irvine School of Medicine. The study revealed that approximately 40% of teenagers are delaying obtaining their driver’s licenses by 1 to 2 years, while 30% are postponing it for more than 2 years.

A 2017 study revealed a notable trend over the last two decades: the percentage of high school seniors with a driver's license dropped from 81% in 2006 to 72% in 2015. Experts worry that postponing licensing might threaten teenage safety and slow their journey to independence.
