Route 7 in Pownal was shut down Friday afternoon as crews battled a house fire on the 200 block of Route 7.

The Bennington Banner  reports the fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. in the area of Frost Lane and Bryce Road, off Searles Crossing Road, east of the highway.

Flames could be seen shooting out of the roof of a wood home sitting on a hill above the road as crews pumped water and foam to suppress the fire.

Both lanes of travel on Route 7 were redirected so fire crews could access the scene.

Southbound traffic was redirected onto Monument Road.

It was not immediately clear where northbound traffic was rerouted to. Route 7 was open to one-lane traffic around 3 p.m.

The Bennington Fire Department, Bennington Rural Fire, the Pownal Fire Department and the Williamstown (Mass.) Fire Department were among the departments that responded to the scene.

It was not immediately clear if anyone was home at the time of the fire or what started the blaze.
