When looking to purchase a variety of items at a reasonable price, it's hard not to make a stop at Walmart. Whether it's taking advantage of the pickup service or shopping in the store, I purchase a number of my groceries and home goods from Walmart.

Cereal, peanut butter, spoons, forks, detergent, deodorant, ice cream, batteries, and more are just some of the items that I buy regularly, primarily at the Pittsfield store. I'm not alone; according to Walmart's website, the retail giant receives 14.5 billion customer visits per year.

In Berkshire County, we have two Walmart stores. One at the Berkshire Crossing Center in Pittsfield and the expanded supercenter off of Curran Highway in North Adams. In some ways, I'm surprised the Berkshires doesn't have at least one more Walmart store, but that's the case.

Another aspect that kind of surprises me is Walmart's top-selling product. Do you know what it is? No, it's not toilet paper, cleaning supplies, dog food, or even paper towels. According to the retailer's website, the single top-selling product at Walmart by unit volume and total weight is the banana, with over 1.5 billion pounds sold annually.

So, why is the banana Walmart's top-selling item? Bananas are low-cost and in high demand. I suppose this makes sense. You can quickly eat a banana or put it in your cereal, oatmeal, etc. There's a lot you can do with a banana when it comes to consumption, and it's healthy for you to boot.

Walmart has a whole backstory and its relationship with the banana, which you can check out by going here.
