If you're experiencing marriage problems, especially if trust issues make you feel your marriage is at risk, this could be helpful. As you know, cheating is regarded as one of the gravest mistakes in a marriage. Clearly, most people know at least one individual who has cheated.

Women's Day reports that Massachusetts is one of 16 states with a law prohibiting adultery in marriage, which is defined as having sexual relations with someone other than one's spouse.

Although there hasn't been a case in over 40 years, it still remains a possibility

Interestingly, Massachusetts has not reported any adultery cases since 1983. Nowadays, most couples choose the easier option of signing divorce papers and moving on.

Although news rarely cover jail sentences for cheating, a judge still has the legal power to impose a severe punishment if they decide to.

What Are the Effects of Infidelity on Your Spouse in Massachusetts?

The Week reports that in Massachusetts, it is a felony punishable by up to 3 years in prison if convicted. Several other states, including Idaho, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin, also classify it as a felony. Although it might be a misdemeanor elsewhere, penalties can still include up to 3 months in jail and a fine.

States such as New York are working to decriminalize marital infidelity by repealing related laws. As a result, residents of New York might legally participate in extramarital affairs in the city that never sleeps.

Here is a list of all states where cheating on your spouse is considered illegal, as reported by Woman's Day.

  1. Arizona
  2. Florida
  3. Kansas
  4. Illinois
  5. Massachusetts
  6. Oklahoma
  7. Idaho
  8. Michigan
  9. Wisconsin
  10. Minnesota
  11. Utah
  12. New York
  13. Mississippi
  14. Georgia
  15. South Carolina
  16. North Carolina

Interestingly, although it's still illegal in Maryland, the highest penalty is just a $10 fine. Not exactly a big deal, is it?

What if you're married in a state where it's legal but cheat in a state where it's illegal? That's a question for a good lawyer. That's all I can say.
