With the North Adams city clerk planning to retire, the City Council has begun looking ahead to finding her replacement.

The Berkshire Eagle reports Council President Keith Bona last week said the council will form an ad hoc committee to begin to discuss the future of the position.

City Clerk Marilyn Gomeau, who has served since 2003, plans to retire at the end of the year. Unlike most City Hall positions, which are appointed by the mayor, the clerk is appointed by the City Council.

The salary for the position is set at $53,019 in the budget for fiscal 2019. "We may need to discuss what's going to be required to fill that," Bona said. "There's training involved."

Councilor Wayne Wilkinson noted the position will be a topic of discussion in the council's Finance Committee meetings and as it continues to review Mayor Thomas Bernard's proposed budget for fiscal 2019.
