We all know that Massachusetts isn't exactly the biggest piece of land. In fact, when compared to the rest of the states in the U.S., it is the 7th smallest state in the country. The state itself, covers only 10,554.39 square miles. And with that being the case, approximately just 7,800 square miles of that is land (thanks, Atlantic Ocean). Despite that fact, we have some relatively decent sized towns and cities, land-wise. But there is a town and a city that have to take their respective titles of the smallest in the state.

There is no city or town in Massachusetts that wants to have this distinction. Nor is there any city or town anywhere that wants to be called this. But unfortunately, it had to go to some place in the Bay State.

In a state with so much history, all around nature, and plenty of spots for a relaxing getaway throughout, it seems to be tough to not find a Massachusetts town would earn a spot among the most charming towns in America. So, what town in the Bay State checks all the boxes to end up as one of the five most charming towns in America?

Massachusetts has some really old towns. Like, really old. That being said, America just happened to celebrate a birthday last week on July 4th. In fact, it was America's 247th birthday. But did you that a town in Massachusetts is way older than that? By way older, we mean, more than a century older. And beyond that, it's more than 150 years older than America.

When you think of Massachusetts, you might think of its rich history, Boston, all the sports teams, Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Salem, Nantucket, etc. But it's a little bit of a stretch to think of any place in Massachusetts as the 'most hippie town' throughout the entire Bay State, right? However, it seems that one particular town in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has claimed that title.

Massachusetts is home to some of the most unique towns of any state throughout the country. They seem to have a capitalized on a certain niche and style for town names in the Bay State. While most of them have some sort of history behind them, there are some that you will hear and then think to yourself, "That town definitely sounds like it could only be in Massachusetts." But some towns just sound so fake, but are they really?

The New England states are some of the most densely populated throughout the county, so you would mostly expect any town throughout any of its states to have a relatively decent population. In fact, throughout the New England states, there are 235 people per square mile on average, which is much higher than the national average of 79.56 people per square mile. However, despite the fact that Massachusetts has the highest population of all the New England states, one of its towns has population that is even less than the national average of people per square mile.

With so much history throughout the entire state of Massachusetts, it's always interesting to learn about each town and cities history. While it is pretty well known that the oldest city in the state is Plymouth, over on the western side, perhaps it is not nearly as well known what the oldest towns in the Berkshires are.
