Never leave your pets in a hot car!

As the Bay State experiences record-high heat, it's important to remember that Massachusetts law prohibits confining animals in vehicles exposed to extreme weather, which can lead to a $150 fine. Although no law explicitly bans leaving children unattended in cars, those responsible can be charged with child endangerment or neglect.

AAA reports that most car-related fatalities happen when temperatures exceed 80 degrees. Within only 10 minutes, a car's interior can heat up to nearly 100 degrees. Emergency responders such as police, firefighters, or animal control officials are permitted to enter your vehicle if an animal inside is in distress. Additionally, civilians may also enter your car to rescue a pet, but only after calling 911 and if there are no other options for the animal to escape.
