The idea, posted recently to the website Delish, is simple: The parent throwing the party suggests to guests to give the birthday boy or girl $5. This cuts down on the expense to the guests -- obviously no gift costs less than a fiver -- and it cuts down on the clutter of more expensive gifts that the recipient will get, but doesn't want.

Then, the birthday kid can pool those fives and put them towards something they actually want.
