Property Lien Scam Affecting Taxpayers

The Massachusetts Society of Enrolled Agents and the Internal Revenue Service have issued a warning about a property lien scam that could affect state taxpayers.

The Berkshire Eagle  reports according to the IRS, the scheme involves a letter threatening an IRS lien or levy that is mailed to a taxpayer. The lien or levy is based on bogus overdue taxes owned to a non-existent agency that may have a legitimate sounding name, like "Bureau of Tax Enforcement", an entity that does not exist.

The scam may also reference the IRS to confuse potential victims into thinking the letter is from a real agency.

Those effected by this scam should contact the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration to report the letter on the IRS Impersonation scam reporting webpage. Use the keyword, "IRS Lien" when reporting the scam.
