Major Sports Struck Down By COVID-19 Concerns
Wednesday night, the NBA announced it was suspending its season due to the worldwide COVID-19 outbreak. Today the NHL followed suit, effective immediately.
A statement from the league said they will "pause" the 2019-20 season, and said their goal is "to resume play as soon as it is appropriate and prudent, so that we will be able to complete the season and award the Stanley Cup."
Collegiate basketball conferences across the country, including the A-10, Big East, and ACC decided to cancel their conference championships tournaments, many of which were already underway. Today's Big East quarterfinal between Creighton & St.John's was halted at halftime.
The situation is subject to change moment to moment, but as of this moment the NCAA still has plans to hold its National Championship Tournament, but with no spectators allowed.
And just this afternoon, Major League Baseball announced it was cancelling its remaining spring training games and delaying Opening Day, which was set for March 26, by at least two weeks.
