The Mail Truck Built By Apollo Engineers Is Finally Getting Replaced
I recently passed the Adams Post Office and saw something unusual in the parking lot. Usually, only the regular mail delivery vehicle is there, but this time, it caught me off guard for a moment.
Let's begin by talking about the mail truck you're familiar with.
The existing mail delivery vehicle
The daily mail truck, known as the Grumman LLV (Long Life Vehicle), was built on a modified Chevrolet S-10 chassis by defense contractor Grumman, the same company that constructed the Apollo lunar module.
Why is the truck so iconic, and why is the USPS phasing it out?
The LLV was designed solely for residential mail delivery, featuring a tight turning radius, sliding doors, and a sturdy, corrosion-resistant aluminum body. However, it has drawbacks such as poor fuel efficiency, no air conditioning, lack of airbags, and limited traction in snow. Additionally, they've been in service since 1987, far exceeding the planned 24-year lifespan. Production ended in 1994.
The Next Generation Mailtrucks
These new, somewhat quirky trucks are called the Oshkosh Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV). They are equipped with the Ford EcoBoost 2.0L engine and can be readily adapted into hybrid models.
Enhanced Safety Features
Oshkosh's NGDV, often called the 'duck-billed option,' is engineered to optimize interior space and enhance outward visibility, especially for drivers navigating against traffic in busy pedestrian zones. It is tall enough to allow a person to stand and work inside. The vehicle includes modern automotive safety features such as airbags, a 360-degree camera, automatic emergency braking, and collision-avoidance systems. Additionally, it is equipped with air conditioning.
Additional Safety Features Updated
The NGDV includes a second curbside door, allowing mail carriers to access the cargo area directly and avoid standing in traffic. It also features an automatic parking brake that engages when parked, the driver exits, or the ignition is off, and releases when the vehicle starts and shifts into drive or reverse. The ignition only operates when the transmission is in park or neutral. Proximity sensors on the bumpers beep intermittently when objects are within 8 feet and sound a continuous alarm at 6 inches.

When will the new NGDV begin service in Berkshire County?
Although the trucks are already traveling nationwide, Berkshire County is catching up and getting theirs on the road too. With summer here, the air conditioning will be especially appreciated by postal workers.
