The Williamstown Fire Department needs to step up recruitment efforts and either add part-time positions or increase funding for on-call firefighters, according to a recently released report.

The report studied the readiness and effectiveness of the Fire Department and, after evaluating the structures in town and the department's facilities, apparatus and operations, it found the town to be at "moderate to high level of risk."

But, it wasn't due to a lack of effort on the part of the department. It was more due to issues outside its control, such as an inadequate and outdated fire station, a lack of new volunteers to keep the department fully responsive, and the value and complexity of some of the institutional buildings at Williams College and The Clark Art Institute.
