The proximity of EZ Mart Foods on Ashland Street to a nearby school may stymie its quest for a beer and wine package store license.

The Berkshire Eagle reports the city's License Commission tabled the convenience store's application last week while it seeks guidance from the city's legal counsel and from the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.

The commission warned representatives of the business that it may have been a hair late in applying for the license, as the North Berkshire Academy opened in the nearby city-owned armory building earlier this year.

As co-owner Mustafa Jamal addresses technical issues cited in the 232 Ashland St. business's application, the commission will work to determine if the license falls within the 500-foot buffer zone, the parties agreed last week.
